Here are some Frequently asked questions of Bea about writing

Q: When did you start writing?
A: I've dabbled in writing all my life but had short stories published in Sunday School take-home papers first, then my first novel in 1983.
Q: Where do you get story ideas?
A: Everywhere--from daily life situations, newspaper articles, TV, from my own mind.
Q: Are your fiction characters based on real people?
A: Never completely, but I use bits and pieces of the personalities of real people, plus imaginary people in my mind.
Q: How can I get my book or article published?
A: It usually isn't easy, but using Writer's market books to send out query letters persistently pays off--if you have a well written book or article.
Q: If I insist on an editor not changing  anything about my story or article can  I still get published?
A: In most cases not.  Editors know much about writing and they are usually right when they want to change, clip or edit your writing.
Q: What have editors changed about your books?
A: They have had me do rewrites on certain parts of my books, clipped them to make them shorter--to fit their allowed number of pages, corrected mistakes and given excellent advice.  Respect your editors!
Q: Which are most important, plot or character?
A: Both are extremely important.  If you don't have an exciting story, no one will want to read your story, but if the characters are not strong, your good plot is wasted.
Q: What else do readers expect in a good story?
A: Readers want their emotions touched powerfully.  They want to get inside the characters and live the story with  the characters.
Q: How can I get an editor to read my story?
A: Grab the editor with the first line of your query letter, and hold his attention with your short--one page--letter.  SELL your story!  Do the best writing you possibly can.
Q: What else can I do to get published
A: Polish and rewrite--and rewrite--your story or article and have others read it and look for ways to improve it.  Be sure there are no grammar mistakes or misspelled words.  Then send it off to publishers.  And pray!
